Book Review | The Keeper of the Mist by Rachel Neumeier

The Keeper of the Mist
by Rachel Neumeier

Keri has been struggling to run her family bakery since her mother passed away. Now the father she barely knew—the Lord of Nimmira—has died, and ancient magic has decreed that she will take his place as the new Lady. The position has never been so dangerous: the mists that hide Nimmira from its vicious, land-hungry neighbors have failed, and Keri's people are visible to strangers for the first time since the mists were put in place generations ago.

At the same time, three half-brothers with their own eyes on the crown make life within the House just as dangerous as the world outside. But Keri has three people to guide her: her mysterious Timekeeper, clever Bookkeeper, and steadfast Doorkeeper. Together they must find a way to repair the boundary before her neighbors realize just how vulnerable Nimmira is.

Okay. so this book just put me in a reading slump. I could barely finish it, and I hate not being able to finish any book I've started. The blurb showed promise - Ancient Magic, unexpected heir, greedy brothers who were not chosen, and of course the faithful friends who help the Heroine grow into herself. See, it could have been an great read. It's isn't even fit for young kids reading.

So the story opens with Keri decorating a cake in her bakery while gossiping with her best friend Tassel, about the thinning mist and about who will succeed the Lord when he dies. All of a sudden 3 people - the Timekeeper, the Bookkeeper, and the Doorkeeper arrive at her bakery and tell her with no preamble whatsoever that she is the new Lady of Nimmira. That was all just in the first Chapter.

So it seems that the Country (?) of Nimmira is a land between two huge Countries and is shrouded in a magical mist that hides them from either neighbors and anyone who goes near the border are magically turned away. The Lord or Lady of Nimmira keeps the Mist in place, and Keri who was suddenly reveled as the Lord's daughter was chosen by the magic of their country to be the Heir and Lady. Keri's father caused the Mist from thinning to the point of it disappearing all together and exposing Nimmira to their neighbors just as Keri ascended into her title as Lady. She, her Timekeeper, Bookkeeper, and Doorkeeper go on an adventure to restore the mist and hide Nimmira once more, especially from the Wyvern King.

There were o much pointless fillers and chatter that I was skipping through whole paragraphs just to get to the authors point in the story. It was like all of what was happening was only in the authors head and it translated to a lot of over thinking for the main protagonists and too many flowery words. I did not particularly care for the characters. They were all static - no character development. There was supposed to be fear for the Wyvern King but I couldn't feel it in their encounter with him. Not even the original goal of putting the mist back up had any feeling to it.

This book was dull and poorly written. That pretty much sums it up. The plot had a lot of promise but it was never delivered.
