Black Dawn (Black Dawn #1)
by Mallory McCartney

The end of an Empire, The rise of a Queen.

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory's arrival she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

I featured this book last month when I did a mail time post and I got this book in the mail. If you haven't read it yet you can go check it out here.  Like I mentioned on my mail time post, the author, Mallory McCartney is so sweet for sending my a hard copy of her book all the way from Canada.

The book isn't what I expected. I was thinking a changeling was left on earth and is finally taken back to the world of the Fae. It's like this is an entirely different world and the Fae are only part of the story. We are introduced to characters who are like the X-men, human with powers. The book started action packed right away with a vivid description of the characters. I particularly liked how they are described as having green, blue, or purple hair. Their powers are also kinda described, especially to Emory who is called a Leech. We have elements of a rebellion and a monarchy - of course Emory is a Princess, and a little romance on the side.

There were a lot of confusing parts in the book though. Too many things had no back story or were left unexplained. Even the main antagonist Adair, although there was some sort of back story as to why he's such a psychopath, didn't feel like a warranted evil character. I am not sorry to say that I do not like Memphis as all. He came out as a douche and felt like he is only in love with the idea of loving Emory. I was plenty surprised the Brokk was Emory's half brother though. Yet another back story that needs exploring. EVen the resistance calling themselves the Academy then the Black Dawn was kinda conflicting and cheesy.

Still this book has definitely shows a lot of promise. More to watch out for when the sequels come out. And it's not a bad read for the authors debut novel.
