Published May 29th 2018 by Knopf Books for Young Readers
Genre: Young Adult and Science-Fiction
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

From the coauthor of the New York Times bestselling Illuminae Files comes the first book in a new series that’s part Romeo and Juliet, part Terminator, and all adrenaline.

On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

Even if those secrets were better off staying buried.

REVIEW

Almost all the Blog Tours I have joined in the past have always been hosted outside of my country, this book would be the 2nd book who has been hosted by fellow Filipino bloggers and I feel so lucky to be part of it. Check out and follow The Royal Polar Bear Reads

For this book tour, I actually got sent a physical copy by our lovely host. Now most of the books I have been gravitating towards have been Fantasy books. It's seldom that I would unconsciously pick up a sci-fi or mystery book to read, and it is refreshing to read them whenever I get a chance to. It's way different than the other book tours I've done where we are given ebook copies. This is also the 2nd book I have read from Jay Kristoff (first one is The Illuminae Files) so I got into the book with a little idea of the writing style of the author.

So the book. For the first few chapters I was recognizing the similarities with the story of Anastasia Romanov - her family, how they were killed and her having survived; and also a little bit of the story of Pinocchio and surprisingly not because of the Android LifeL1ke Ezekial who is a prominent supporting character in the book.

What I liked.

And the best supporting character award goes to, of course, the best friend Lemon Fresh. It tickled me silly that Eve called her Lem, which was the nickname my Dad gave me when I was born (it's supposed to be a short version of my full name..long story). I loved her loyalty to Eve and how she watches over her all the time that they were together. I also loved Kaiser the Blitzhund, I am a sucker for puppers and it broke my heart when he blew up to save Eve.

One of the blurbs of the book says it's a Romeo and Juliet meets Mad Max meets X-Men, I would say there was absolutely no Romeo and Juliet in this case. The romance was part was written off perfectly.

And OMG that ending?? I did not see that coming and it was awesome! I wonder if this is going to be a series, I want more of Eve, Lemon Fresh, and even Cricket. This book lives up to it's title - it is Life Like, brutal, and not served on a silver platter.

Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Do you think my rating gave it justice?
