Book Review | Forever Snow by V.B. Marlowe

Forever Snow
(The Everly Girls #1)
by V.B. Marlowe

Neva has more problems than the average seventeen year old: a fear of mirrors, lips that cause death upon contact, an insatiable addiction to apples, and she's been doomed to repeat the same three years of her life over and over.

She may be the prettiest girl around, but her beauty has caused her nothing but trouble. Neva has been cursed by a vengeful coven of ruthless witches. She has a small window of time to break her curse, or she will have to live with her burdens for all eternity.

Forever Snow is a twist on the Snow White fairy tale. I picked it up because of the cover. I kinda expected it to be a dark retelling but I got a pleasant surprise. I think I already mentioned how much I liked reading retellings, and I can't even count how many Snow White, Cinderela, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast stories I've read. There was a lot of hits and misses but this one is definitely a hit. This was an easy read with a writing style reminisce of Alex Flinn. The Characters are well developed and the plot twist was fun.

The main protagonist has gone through a few variations of her original name Snow White, and currently she is using Neva (Pronounced Nay-Vah) Albano. She insist from the start that the fairy tales we know are grossly different than what actually happened. And here is where the author had some fun. Like what we know of Snow White - she is a princess whose mother dies when she was born, and her father the King married again to, of course, the antagonist, who turned out to be a witch. Because of Snows beauty the Queen tried tried to have her killed by the huntsman and bring her Snows heart. That obviously failed in any version of the story and Snow was able to live 3 years safe from the Queen. Fast forward and the Queen finally tricks Snow into eating the "poisoned" apple, but instead of her "dying" she is cursed to live from the age of 15 to 17 over and over again, have an obsession with apples, and she can't look into mirrors. She is cursed along with the Huntsman who now poses as her father, and every 3 years they have to move when Neva's age resets to 15. The cure for the curse is not true loves kiss. Neva has to cut out the heart of a teenager to earn the elixir and break her curse.

Imagine the misadventures that could happen with that kind of scenario. I was enjoying reading every minute of this book. By the end of the book, Neva was able to break her curse, lose a friend (who had a twist in his own story), discover there were more people who had curses put on them and that there was a school where they are learning to survive, and that a Fairy was looking for her to help the other girls break their own curses. Lots of stuff packed in a not so thick book. And yes there is more but I will get into that after I read book 2 (you can check the blurb below).

Forever Ella
(The Everly Girls #2)
by V.B. Marlowe
Book Two of the Everly Girls Series

Ella’s life couldn’t be anything further from a fairytale. She wasn’t the daughter of a rich man, but a servant in Snow White’s palace. Those glass slippers you’ve heard so much about? They actually exist. However, they don’t lead Ella to any dreamy prince—they’re her greatest weapon.

After being dealt curse after curse, Ella is given the chance to start over and begin a new life. It’s nothing fancy. She works in a book store and lives in a one-room apartment with the love of her life, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. After enduring the ups and downs of the palace, the simple life is a breeze. Unfortunately, a coven of witches is determined to make her pay for her father’s participation in a witch hunt that almost wiped them out. Ella is given a week to use her glass slippers to kill a girl named Scarlett. If she doesn’t complete this unspeakable task, she’ll lose everything she loves.

PS. This is already in my TBR pile. I'll probably post a separate review for this.
