“She is catalyst.
She is chaos.
I can see why he loves her.”

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)
by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

This book confused the heck out of me at the beginning since it was files or logs of what was happening to the characters. Eventually I got used to it and actually enjoyed the book. The twist was awesome when it's discovered that the AI Aiden was actually the one basically running everything since the start of the book.

I think my favorite part of the book was when I realized the logic behind Aidan, the same time the female protagonist, Kady, did. Aidan was a character anyone would love to hate at the onset but ends up a hero all the same. The thoughts of Aidan is that we were made of 0's and 1's (binary code) and couldn't fully comprehend the logic behind his actions and his directive. I guess he was right. The fact that is was all logs made sense.

I must say I didn't like the mushy teenage romance parts of the story as I found them cheesy but I knew it was essential to the story to establish the fact that Kady is human and young, but she was the only one who was able to save everybody.

And then the part at the end where it is revealed that it was Ezra's mom who was the one behind the attack on the Kerenza Colony that triggered the events of the book made me want to read the next book Gemina but I can't get it yet. Ugh! I seriously got all the books by Leigh Bardugo just before I started reading Illuminae and now my bank card in't allowing me another purchase so soon. I'm going to try again in a few days I guess. LOL
