Movie Review | Beauty and the Beast Live Action (2017)

To celebrate the revival of my blog (for the Nth time..LOL), I decided to make a review of the Live Action adaptation of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Before starting, I have to admit though, that I may be biased in this review. Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite Disney Fairy tale, and Belle my favorite Disney Princess. Even so, I'm inviting you all to sings along with the tunes and come along for the ride.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast
(March 2017)
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Starring: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Beauty and the Beast is a 2017 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon from a screenplay written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos, and co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films.[1][7] The film is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 1991 animated film of the same name, itself an adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's 18th-century fairy tale.[8] The film features an ensemble cast that includes Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the eponymous characters with Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson in supporting roles. [1]

Storyline: Disney's animated classic takes on a new form, with a widened mythology and an all-star cast. A young prince, imprisoned in the form of a beast, can be freed only by true love. What may be his only opportunity arrives when he meets Belle, the only human girl to ever visit the castle since it was enchanted. [2]

So, honestly, who hasn't seen this movie yet? Seriously? Because if you haven't, I would calmly tell you to get your a$$ to the theater and watch it - like NOW.

Kidding aside. For most of us, it has been 26 yrs. since we first saw this enchanting story of a bookish girl named Belle who tamed and loved the wild Beast. For a 9 yrs old who loved to read (I'm seeing those people calculating how old I am..Haha), the story captured my heart and imagination. Who would think a girl who reads can become a princess?

I found out Emma Watson was going to play Belle about a year ago when the remake of Beauty and Beast was only a rumor. Even back then I hoped it would be true. Even if Emma will always be known as the book smart witch Hermoine Granger from the Harry Potter Series, she has come a long way from then, and she hasn't disappointed. I was honestly even expecting that she wouldn't be providing the singing voice of Belle - I didn't know she could sing, autotune or not. I guess she surprised a lot of people, me included, how well she actually sang her musical parts.

When I found out the day this movie was going to be shown I vowed I would watch it on the day it actually came out. I did the same with the Cinderella live action movie and most of the movie patrons with me were families with kids. With Beauty and the Beast, I was in line with people my age. I could clearly hear a lot of us singing along to "Belle".

I'm not going to go into any more detail. I mean, sure the magical furniture didn't have half as much charm as the cartoon version, couldn't see much of their expressions except maybe for Cogsworth. Even the "controversy" about Le Fou being an "openly gay" character actually added a little bit of fun to the movie.

Overall and suffice it to say, we were all mesmerized by the magic of seeing our childhood stories come to life. In the words of one of my friends - S P E C T A C U L A R.
