I am sucker for Retellings of Beauty and the Beast. And after the Live Action movie came out 2 weeks ago, I'm still reeling from the magnitude of it all. So I got myself a fix and found Hunted by Meagan Spooner. Like any retellings, the story revolves around a girl who meets a beast and breaks a curse. It then depends on the author how to present the characters and twist the plot.
Meagan Spooner handled this story well, taking inspiration from the original some of the older retellings. Like in Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's version, Yeva is the youngest daughter of the Merchant. But the hunt is what calls her away from her loving sisters. I loved how Yeva veered away from the "bookish only" Beauty that is common in Retellings. She has loved hunting as much as reading since she was young when her father was still a hunter and would take her on his hunting trips.
The Beast literally captures Yeva thinking her Father would come for her. The Beast needed a Hunter to capture the Firebird to turn him back into a human. The Beast is portrayed here as much more an animal - his thinks of himself as "we", a man and wolf, and the wolf is mostly always dominant.
Like I mentioned, the story closely resembles the standard Beauty and the Beast plot line. So the Beauty still saved the Beast - by saving herself first. Yeva found a way to face her wanting for something else thinking it would bring her closer to what she wanted most in the world, just like the Beast.
I really enjoyed this book. It satisfied my Beauty and the Beast addiction. I am but a weal mortal.
